As a coach, Auerbach used a specific way to play called the fast break. This meant his teams moved very quickly to score points. He also taught his players that defense was just as important as offense.

He wanted his players to play tough defense to force mistakes. By doing this, his teams could run fast and score easily. He even valued "sixth men," who were players who came off the bench to help. This style of play helped his teams dominate for many years.

Red Auerbach was born on September 20, 1917, in Brooklyn, New York.
