He worked to build teams that people still love today. He helped start the Boston Celtics basketball team in 1945. To pay for the team, he took out a mortgage on his home. He also helped form the Basketball Association of America in 1946. Later, he helped merge two leagues into the National Basketball Association. This group is now known as the NBA. Brown helped turn the Celtics into a great dynasty. They won six championships in only seven years.

Brown also spent much of his life working with ice hockey. He coached the amateur Boston Olympics to five Eastern Hockey League titles. In 1933, he guided the United States to its first gold medal. This happened at the Ice Hockey World Championships. He also helped start the Ice Capades in 1940. This was a show with many ice skaters. Later, he bought the Boston Bruins hockey team in 1951. He served as the president of the International Ice Hockey Federation from 1954 to 1957.

His life was full of many different roles. He was born in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, in 1905. He went to Boston Latin and Phillips Exeter Academy. He took over as manager of the Boston Garden from his father, George V. Brown. He also led the Boston Athletic Association from 1941 to 1964. During the Korean War in 1951, he made a difficult choice. He denied entry to Korean runners for the Boston Marathon. He felt they should be fighting for their country instead.

Many special honors were given to him after his work. Brown died in Hyannis, Massachusetts, on September 7, 1964. The Boston Celtics retired his uniform number 1 in 1964. An NBA championship trophy was named after him too. He was added to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1962. He also joined the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1965. In 1997, he was part of the first group in the IIHF Hall of Fame.

Today, we see his impact in how sports are run. A hockey tournament in Colorado Springs was named the Walter A. Brown International Hockey Tournament. It used the "Brown Trophy" from 1964 to 1968. His work helped create the leagues we watch on TV. He showed how one person can help build entire sports worlds. His name stays alive through these teams and trophies.
