A team is more than just a group of people. It is a group working together to reach a common goal.

Members often have different skills that help each other. This creates something called synergy. Synergy means the whole group can do more than each person could do alone. Professor Leigh Thompson says members share information, resources, and knowledge. They combine their efforts to succeed. This makes the team stronger than the sum of its parts.

Teams can work in many different ways. Some teams work in person in the same building. Others are virtual teams that use technology to talk.

Virtual team members might live in different countries. They use electronic tools to coordinate their work. There are also many types of specialized teams. Action teams create plans and take action. Advisory teams use experts to make suggestions about a product. Command teams act as a middle man to pass instructions along. Executive teams make big plans and then direct the work.

Some teams only exist for a short time. These are called project teams. They are formed to finish one specific task.

Researchers Lundin and Soderholm say these are temporary organizations. They are defined by four things called the four T's. These are Time, Task, Team, and Transition. The team works hard because they have a set amount of time. Once the task is finished, the team usually ends. This is different from a permanent organization that works on long-term goals.

People also group teams by how members rely on one another. In an interdependent team, everyone must cooperate to succeed.

A rugby team is a great example of this. No single player can win a game by playing alone. Every person's success is tied to the whole team. On the other hand, independent teams work differently. In a track and field team, each runner performs their own race. One person's speed does not change how the next person runs. Many business teams, like doctors or teachers, are independent teams.

Learning about teams helps us understand how the world works. Teams can be made of humans or even animals. For example, logistics workers might use teams of horses or oxen.
