geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Puli Khumri is a significant city located in northern Afghanistan. It serves as the capital of Baghlan Province. The city sits within a valley near the Kunduz River. This area is part of the massive Hindu Kush mountain range. Because of its position, Puli Khumri acts as a vital transit and trading hub. It is a place where many people move goods and travel between regions. The city is divided into six administrative districts known as nahias.

The geography of the city is defined by its connection to major routes. The Afghanistan Ring Road runs through the area. This road links Puli Khumri to several important locations. To the north, it connects to Kunduz. To the northwest, the road leads to Mazar-i-Sharif in Balkh Province. To the southeast, it reaches Charikar in Parwan Province. This network makes the city a central point for movement across northern Afghanistan.

Land use in Puli Khumri is largely shaped by its environment. Agriculture is the most common use for the land. Approximately 65% of the city's area is used for farming. Most of these agricultural lands are found in Districts 3, 5, and 6. The city's housing is also quite varied. Residents live in regular houses, irregular houses, and hillside homes. There are also apartment buildings scattered throughout the districts. District 5 contains the highest number of dwelling units.

The climate in the region is classified as cool semi-arid. This is known scientifically as a BSk climate. The weather patterns influence what can grow in the local soil. July is typically the hottest month of the year. Conversely, January is the coldest month. The city relies on two dams to manage its water and energy. These dams provide necessary electricity for the region. Electrical transmission lines carry this power from Puli Khumri to the capital, Kabul.

Industry plays a major role in the local economy. Puli Khumri is known for mining, transport, and textile production. The city is home to at least one major textile factory. It is also famous for the Ghori I Cement Factory. This was Afghanistan's first cement factory. It was built in 1954 with financial support from Czechoslovakia. Workers mine limestone from the hill located directly behind the factory. There is also a coal mine in the nearby village of Kar-kar.

The history of the city includes major political shifts. In the 1980s, Puli Khumri became the capital of Baghlan Province. Previously, the central city of Baghlan held this status. This change happened under the influence of Sayed Mansur Naderi. The move was intended to make administrative offices easier to reach. It leveraged the city's location on the Kabul-Mazar highway. In 1989, President Najibullah formalized this transfer through decree number 1603. This was following an initial proposal by Sultan Ali Keshtmand.

Recent history has also been marked by significant events. In August 1988, explosions occurred at a nearby Soviet ammunition depot. Witnesses described the resulting smoke as looking like a nuclear mushroom cloud. The city has also experienced various periods of conflict. In 2019, the city saw assaults by Taliban members. Later, in August 2021, the Taliban captured Puli Khumri. This was the eighth provincial capital they took during their offensive. In October 2023, a suicide bombing at a Shia mosque caused many casualties.

Today, Puli Khumri is a large center for education and living. The population is estimated to be 230,112 people. The city is home to Baghlan University. There are also many public and private schools available. The urban area contains many banks, hotels, and restaurants. It also features mosques, hospitals, and public parks. These facilities support a population that works in diverse fields like trade and agriculture.
