Taloqan is a major city located in northern Afghanistan. It serves as the capital of the Takhar Province. The city is part of the Taloqan District. It is a large urban center with an estimated population of 284,990 people. The people living in Taloqan belong to several different ethnic groups. These include Tajiks, Uzbeks, Pashtuns, and Hazaras. The city is divided into six administrative districts known as nahias.

The city functions as a central hub for the surrounding region. A major road passes through the center of Taloqan. This road connects the city to Kunduz in the west. It also provides a route to Fayzabad in the northeast. Taloqan is also home to Takhar University in the northwestern part of the city. For travel, the Taloqan Airport is located a few miles to the north. The city contains many important facilities for its residents. These include banks, hospitals, hotels, and various business centers. There are also many mosques, restaurants, and public parks. Residents use these spaces to relax or play sports.

The geography and climate of Taloqan shape how people live there. The city has a Mediterranean climate, which is known as the Csa classification. This means the weather patterns follow specific seasonal changes. In this climate, there is more rainfall during the winter months than in the summer. The city sits at a specific altitude above sea level. Within the city limits, there are 28,691 recorded dwelling units. This density helps create the busy atmosphere of a provincial capital.

Taloqan has a very long and complex history. In the early 13th century, the city came under Mongol control. This happened during the military campaigns led by Genghis Khan. The Mongols besieged and captured the city after the fall of Balkh. Later, in 1603, a European explorer named Bento de Góis visited the area. He was traveling with a caravan from Kabul toward Yarkand. This journey was part of an expedition through the region.

Famous travelers have written about the city for centuries. In 1275 CE, the explorer Marco Polo described the area. He wrote about a castle called Taikhan located on the riverside. Polo noted that the surrounding country was fine and fruitful. He also described the large, lofty hills to the south. These hills were made of extremely hard white salt. People would travel for thirty days to collect this salt. Polo claimed it was the purest salt in the world. He even said it was so much that it could supply the entire earth.

The modern history of Taloqan has been marked by significant conflict. During the war against the Soviet Army, Ahmad Shah Massoud used Taloqan as a headquarters. On September 5, 2000, the Taliban captured the city after a siege. This event caused hundreds of civilians to lose their lives. Many people fled the city toward the Panjshir Valley and Imam Sahib. The Northern Alliance later liberated Taloqan in November 2001. However, the city faced another major attack during the 2021 Taliban offensive. On August 8, 2021, the Taliban captured the city again. This followed a period of intense fighting and the loss of local leaders.

In addition to its physical history, Taloqan holds special meaning in Islamic sources. Certain narrations suggest the city will play a major role regarding the Mahdi. One narration from Imam Baqir mentions a treasure in Talaqan. This treasure is described as being neither gold nor silver. Instead, it consists of twelve thousand people with a specific slogan. Another narration states that Talaqan is a place of treasures from Allah. These treasures are the people who have recognized Allah as they should. These beliefs add a layer of spiritual importance to the city's identity.
