Ancient history shows that the Hisar Valley has been inhabited for millennia. During the Stone Age, Mousterian tool-users lived in the area. In the second millennium BC, Neolithic cultures like the Hisar, Bishkent, and Vakhsh cultures resided here. These people were involved in agriculture, weaving, and cattle breeding.

Later, the Achaemenid Empire controlled the region by the sixth century BC. The Seleucids conquered the area in 312 BC. The Kushan Empire also established a presence, including a city on the left bank of the Varzob river.

Other groups, such as the Hephthalites and the Sasanian Empire, also left their mark on the region.

For much of its later history, Dushanbe functioned as a vital market town. The name "Dushanbe" comes from the Persian words for "Monday." This refers to the large bazaar that operated every Monday.

The town grew because it sat at a crossroads for many caravan routes. These routes connected the Hisar Valley to places like Bukhara, Samarkand, and Afghanistan. By the turn of the 19th century, the town had 10,000 residents. It was a center for iron smelting, tanning, and weaving. It also featured 14 mosques and 14 teahouses.
