Thimphu is the capital and largest city of the Kingdom of Bhutan.

It is located in the western central part of the country. The city sits within a valley that is part of the Thimphu District. This valley is a narrow, linear space formed by the Wang Chhu river.

The river flows through the heart of the city. It eventually flows out into India as the Raidāk River. Thimphu is a very high-altitude city. It is the highest capital in Asia and the fifth highest in the world.

Because of this height, the city does not have its own airport. Travelers must use Paro Airport and reach Thimphu by road.

The geography of the valley shapes its climate and nature. The city sits in a subtropical highland climate, often called Cwb.

The weather changes significantly with the seasons. From mid-April to September, the southwest monsoon brings heavy rain. During this time, cumulonimbus clouds create lightning, thunder, and showers. These heavy rains can cause landslides and block roads. They also make the rivers swell with mud and forest debris. In winter, the city faces cold winds and low temperatures. Snowfall and fog are common during the colder months. The fog can make it hard for drivers to see the road.

Thimphu's environment is also affected by the surrounding mountains. The hills have different vegetation depending on which side they face. The mountains act as a barrier to the moist monsoon winds. The windward side of a mountain gets much more rain. The leeward side, where Thimphu is located, stays comparatively dry.

Because of this dryness, the valley has many coniferous trees. This is different from the old capital, Punakha. Punakha sits on the windward side and has many broad-leaved trees. The city's growth is managed by the Thimphu Structure Plan, 2002–2027. This urban plan aims to protect the fragile ecology of the valley.

Organizations like the World Bank and Asian Development Bank support this development.

The history of Thimphu shows its growth from small villages to a metropolis. Before 1960, it was just a group of scattered hamlets. These included places like Motithang, Changangkha, and Taba.

A major event happened in 1885 at the Changlimithang sports ground. A battle there helped Ugyen Wangchuck become the first King of Bhutan. In 1952, the government decided to move the capital from Punakha to Thimphu. The third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, officially declared Thimphu the capital in 1961. He also brought many reforms to the country. He abolished serfdom and changed how land and taxes worked.

Political life in Thimphu has changed a lot over the years. The fourth king, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, helped open the country to development. He established the National Assembly in 1953. In 1998, he moved executive powers to a council of ministers. This meant the ministers were elected by the people. In 2008, Bhutan transitioned to a parliamentary democratic constitutional monarchy.

Thimphu is now the headquarters for this new government. The government works toward "Gross National Happiness" alongside economic growth. The coronation of the current king was even held at the Changlimithang Stadium.

Another district, Kawajangsa, is home to the Institute of Traditional Medicine. The district of Langjupakha contains important government buildings. The National Assembly meets in a building there that mixes modern and Bhutanese styles.

Culture remains a central part of life in the capital. Religion and tradition are seen in the many festivals and buildings. The Tashichho Dzong is a famous fortress-monastery on the northern edge.
