Gangkhar Puensum is the highest peak in the country. It is also the highest unclimbed mountain in the world. The northern mountains transition into lush subtropical plains in the south. This creates a diverse range of environments. The climate varies across these different zones.

The history of Bhutan involves many different names. The name "Bhutan" likely comes from the Tibetan word "Böd." It may be a transcription of the Sanskrit "Bhoṭa-anta." This means "end of Tibet." This refers to its position at the southern edge of the Tibetan plateau. Locally, the country is called Druk yul. This means "Land of the Thunder Dragon." This name refers to the dominant Buddhist sect.

Early Western records used different names. Some called it "Cambirasi" or "Mon." The distinction between Bhutan and Tibet became clearer in 1774. This happened after an expedition by George Bogle. He suggested using "Boutan" for the Druk Desi's kingdom.
