It is a landlocked country, meaning it has no direct access to an ocean. In fact, Lesotho is a sovereign enclave. This means it is entirely surrounded by a single other country, which is South Africa.

It is the largest of only three such enclaves in the world. The other two are San Marino and Vatican City, which are both surrounded by Italy. Lesotho is situated high within the Maloti Mountains. Because of this high altitude, it contains the highest peak in Southern Africa. The country covers an area of over 30,000 square kilometers. It is home to a population of approximately 2.3 million people.

The geography of Lesotho is defined by its rugged, mountainous terrain.

The nation's history began with the formation of a single polity. King Moshoeshoe I established this state around 1824.

He was a leader of the Basotho people. During his reign, he faced challenges from the Lifaqane, which were widespread conflicts in the region. He also dealt with encroaching Dutch settlers known as Trekboers. To protect his people, Moshoeshoe I entered an agreement with the United Kingdom. This turned the land into a protectorate in 1868. By 1884, it became a British crown colony known as Basutoland. This era of colonial rule lasted until the country gained independence in 1966.

Political life in Lesotho has been complex since independence. The Basotho National Party (BNP) ruled for the first two decades. However, political stability has fluctuated over the years. The country experienced seven years of military rule before restoring its constitutional government in 1993. The monarchy has also seen significant shifts. King Moshoeshoe II was exiled in 1990 but returned in 1992. He was eventually reinstated in 1995. After his death in 1996, his son Letsie III took the throne. Letsie III remains the current monarch. The country has also faced various coups and leadership changes in recent decades.

Socially, Lesotho is one of the most ethnically homogeneous countries in the world. The Sotho ethnic group, or Basotho, makes up 99.7% of the population. This group provides the country with its name and much of its culture. The native language is Sesotho. Other official languages include English, IsiXhosa, and SiPhuthi. Education is a significant strength for the nation. As of 2021, Lesotho had a literacy rate of 81%. This is one of the highest rates in Africa. Despite this, the country is classified as a lower middle income nation. It faces various socioeconomic challenges that affect daily life.

Lesotho is an active participant in international organizations. It is a member of the United Nations and the African Union. It also belongs to the Commonwealth of Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement. Additionally, it is part of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). These memberships help Lesotho engage with global politics and regional neighbors. The country's economy relies on various sectors. One important sector is the textile industry. This industry produces goods for export, particularly to the United States. However, changes in international trade rules, such as tariffs, can impact the economy deeply. In 2025, new tariffs caused a state of economic emergency. This led to factory closures and job losses, especially among women.

The culture of Lesotho is visible in its traditions and daily life. One famous tradition involves the use of Basotho blankets.

These blankets are a distinct part of the national identity. The country also maintains important institutions like the National University of Lesotho.

Religious life is also prominent, as seen in structures like St Michaels Cathedral.
