For longer distances, people use a small rail system and a network of roads. The city is also served by the Dushanbe International Airport.

Ancient history shows that the Hisar Valley has been inhabited for millennia. During the Stone Age, Mousterian tool-users lived in the area. In the second millennium BC, Neolithic cultures like the Hisar, Bishkent, and Vakhsh cultures resided here. These people were involved in agriculture, weaving, and cattle breeding.

Later, the Achaemenid Empire controlled the region by the sixth century BC. The Seleucids conquered the area in 312 BC. The Kushan Empire also established a presence, including a city on the left bank of the Varzob river. Other groups, such as the Hephthalites and the Sasanian Empire, also left their mark on the region.

For much of its later history, Dushanbe functioned as a vital market town. The name "Dushanbe" comes from the Persian words for "Monday." This refers to the large bazaar that operated every Monday.

The town grew because it sat at a crossroads for many caravan routes. These routes connected the Hisar Valley to places like Bukhara, Samarkand, and Afghanistan. By the turn of the 19th century, the town had 10,000 residents. It was a center for iron smelting, tanning, and weaving. It also featured 14 mosques and 14 teahouses.

The 20th century brought rapid political and demographic changes to the city. In 1922, the Bolsheviks took control of the area. In 1924, Dushanbe was named the capital of the Tajik Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.

This status triggered rapid population growth. The city's name changed several times during this era. Until 1929, it was known in Russian as Dyushambe. From 1929 to 1961, it was renamed Stalinabad. After the period of de-Stalinization, the name reverted to Dushanbe.

Today, Dushanbe is a modern city with a population of approximately 1,228,400 people. The city is a massive driver for the national economy. It accounts for 20% of Tajikistan's total GDP. The city hosts many international conferences and has large tourism and retail sectors.
