Kunduz is a strategic center for the region. It connects many different Afghan cities and towns through a road network. It links to Imam Sahib in the north. It connects to Taloqan in the east. It reaches Baghlan to the south. It links to Mazar-i-Sharif in the west. It also connects to Sher Khan Bandar in the northwest.

The city is located in the historical region of Bactria. It sits near the confluence of two rivers. These are the Kunduz River and the Khanabad River. The city is located near southern Tajikistan. The name Kunduz likely comes from the Persian compound "kohan dež." This phrase means "old/ancient fort." The city's climate is classified as cold semi-arid. This is known as the Köppen BSk classification. The weather features hot summers and cool winters. Precipitation is generally low. Rain is rare during the summer months. Most rain falls between January and April.

Land use in Kunduz is defined by its agriculture. About 65.8% of the total municipal area is used for farming. This makes the area very productive. The province produces wheat, rice, and millet. Because of this, people call it "the hive of the country." Within the built-up areas, residential land makes up 48.3% of the space. There are 29,877 dwellings in these areas. Institutional land covers 17.9% of the built-up area. This figure includes the city's domestic airport. The city also contains an industrial park. It features many hospitals, mosques, and universities. Kunduz University sits in the middle of the city.

Kunduz has a very deep history. Some believe it was the site of the ancient city of Drapsaka. In the 3rd century AD, it was a prosperous center for Buddhist learning. The city has had many different names over time. It was once called Aornos. Later, it was known as Walwalij or Varvaliz. The name Kuhandiz was used during the Timurid Empire. In the 18th century, the region joined the Durrani Empire. It later served as the capital for an Uzbek Khanate. This Khanate reached from Balkh to the Pamir Mountains under Mohammad Murad Beg. The Khanate eventually fell to the Emirate of Afghanistan in 1859.

The early 20th century brought significant changes. Between 100,000 and 200,000 Tajiks and Uzbeks fled to northern Afghanistan. They were escaping the Soviet Red Army in southern Tajikistan. During this time, Kunduz became one of the wealthiest provinces. This wealth came from the Spinzar Cotton Company. This company was founded by Sher Khan Nasher. At its peak, the company employed 5,000 people full time. The company is state-owned and still operates today.

During that summer, the Taliban attacked the city. This fighting displaced tens of thousands of people. There was also a major airstrike on a medical center in 2015. This center was the Kunduz Trauma Centre. It was operated by Médecins Sans Frontières. In 2021, the Taliban launched a nationwide offensive. They fully captured Kunduz on August 8, 2021. Later that year, a suicide attack targeted a mosque. This attack killed over 50 people.

The population of Kunduz is ethnically diverse. Pashtuns are the largest group. This happened after colonization in the late 19th century. Uzbeks and Tajiks are also large groups. Arabs live in the city as well. These Arabs speak Dari and Pashto. These are the two official languages of Afghanistan. They maintain a strong Arab identity. The city is also a hub for culture and sports. Cricket is a very popular sport. The city has a dedicated Kunduz Cricket Ground. Football is also popular. The Mawjhai Amu F.C. team plays in the Afghan Premier League. They use the Kunduz Football Stadium for their matches.
