It is a strategic spot that links many different parts of the country together.

Life in Kunduz is tied closely to the land. Most of the land in the city area is used for farming. About 65.8% of the total area is for agriculture. This makes the region very important for growing food. Farmers here produce wheat, rice, and millet. Because of this, people call the area "the hive of the country." The city also has an industrial park and a domestic airport. You can find many hospitals, mosques, and universities here. Kunduz University is located right in the middle of the city.

The history of Kunduz goes back a very long time. Some believe it was once the site of an ancient city called Drapsaka. It was a famous center for learning in the 3rd century AD. The name Kunduz might come from a Persian phrase meaning "old fort." Over many years, different groups have ruled the area. It was part of the Timurid Empire and the Durrani Empire. Later, it was the capital of an Uzbek Khanate. In the early 20th century, the Spinzar Cotton Company was founded there. This company helped make the province very wealthy.

Many different groups of people call Kunduz home. Most of the people are Pashtun. There are also many Uzbeks, Tajiks, and Arabs living there. The Arabs in Kunduz speak Dari and Pashto. These are the two official languages of Afghanistan. As of September 2025, the city has about 413,996 people. The city is divided into about eight different districts. This mix of people and history makes the city a very unique place to visit.

People in Kunduz also love to stay active with sports. Cricket is one of the most popular games to play. There is even a special place called the Kunduz Cricket Ground. Many people also enjoy football, volleyball, and a game called buzkashi. Some local teams play in big leagues. For example, Mawjhai Amu F.C. plays in the Afghan Premier League. They use the Kunduz Football Stadium for their matches. Whether through farming or sports, Kunduz is a place full of energy.
