Photojournalism is a special way of reporting news using images.

While it usually means still photos, it can also include video. These reporters do more than just take pretty pictures. They follow a strict set of rules to be honest and fair. This helps different communities connect with one another through shared stories. A photojournalist must be very well-informed about the news they cover. They try to be creative so the news is both helpful and interesting.

Doing this job can be a very hard task. Photojournalists are like reporters, but they carry heavy equipment. They often have to make big decisions in just a second. Sometimes they work in bad weather or in very large crowds. They might even face physical danger to get a good shot. They often have limited access to the people they want to photograph. It takes a lot of skill to capture a story under these conditions.

This way of telling stories started a long time ago. In the mid-19th century, new ways of printing made it possible.

The first news photo was used in 1848 to show barricades in Paris. Later, Roger Fenton became the first official war photographer. He took pictures of soldiers and the landscapes where battles happened. During the American Civil War, Mathew Brady took many important photos. Back then, newspapers had to engrave these images before they could print them.

New inventions changed how we see the news. In 1880, a newspaper published the first halftone news photo.

This was much better than an engraving. In 1925, a small 35mm Leica camera was made.

This small size gave photographers much more freedom to move. By 1921, a tool called the wirephoto helped send pictures quickly. These tools helped start the "Golden Age" of photojournalism between the 1930s and 1950s.

During this Golden Age, magazines became very popular.

The Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung helped start the modern news magazine style. In the United States, a magazine called Life became very famous. It used large, glossy pages and high-quality ink. This made the photos look beautiful and very clear. Some photographers even became as famous as celebrities. Today, we still use these ideas to understand the world around us.
