A journalist is a person who gathers important information. They collect facts using text, audio, or pictures. Then, they turn that information into a news story. This entire way of working is called journalism. Journalists help the public understand what is happening in the world. They can work in many different ways. Some work in print, while others work in broadcast or online.

There are many different roles in this field. A reporter is a common type of journalist. They research and write stories by using different sources. This often involves conducting interviews or gathering facts. Some reporters work in a newsroom or at home. Others work outside to witness events in person. Some reporters even have a specific beat. A beat is a special area they cover.

Journalism has changed a lot over time. In 2012 to 2016, a study looked at 27,500 journalists in 67 countries. Most of them were men. The average age was 38 years old. About 50 percent of these workers used print media. About 23 percent worked on television. Many journalists also go to college for their work. About 61 percent of them studied journalism or communications.

Being a journalist can be a very hard job. Some people face danger when they report on wars. Since 1992, 2,253 journalists have been killed worldwide. Most of these deaths were from murder. Some died in combat or on dangerous assignments. Iraq has had 227 deaths since 1992. The Philippines has had 157 deaths. Mexico is also a very dangerous place for them. In 2018, there was a big increase in violence against journalists.

We remember these people through special memorials. A place called the Newseum once had a Journalists Memorial. It honored many people who died while reporting. The Newseum closed in December 2019. Now, a new memorial is being planned. Supporters asked the United States Congress to help. They want to build a memorial on public land. This will use private funds to honor those who fell. It helps us respect their work and their bravery.
