Citizen journalism is a way for regular people to share news.

These people are not professional reporters for big companies. Instead, they act as active members of their own communities. They collect, report, and analyze news on their own. This is sometimes called grassroots or street journalism. It helps people share information that big news groups might miss. This work is very important for sharing stories about local life.

This kind of news sharing works in many different ways. Some people use personal blogs to write their own stories. Others use mobile phones to take videos of things happening. You might see people leaving comments on news stories online. There are even special websites made just for this purpose. Some people work alone to share what they see. Other people work together in groups to check facts. This can include using open source platforms like Wikinews.

The idea of people sharing news is not brand new. In the 1920s, two thinkers named Walter Lippman and John Dewey talked about this. They debated how much the public should help make the news. Between 1915 and 1925, people in St. Croix used local news to speak up. This helped them share views that leaders ignored. Later, journalists began to change how they covered big elections. They wanted to build more trust with the public. This led to the modern movement we see today.

New technology has made this work much easier for everyone.

Cell phones and social media allow people to report news very fast. For example, people shared news during the 2010 Haiti earthquake. They also shared news during the Arab Spring and the Syrian Civil War. Other big events include the 2013 protests in Turkey and the 2014 Ferguson unrest. People even used these tools during the Black Lives Matter movement. These tools help people report breaking news before professional reporters arrive.

Some people have concerns about this way of sharing news. Critics say that citizen journalists do not have professional training. They worry that the news might be biased or one-sided. Because these reporters do not work for big companies, they may lack resources. However, many people see this as a way to be active citizens. It allows people to talk about local schools and public transport. This helps everyone stay connected to the world around them.
