Town hall meetings are special ways for leaders to meet with people.

Politicians use these meetings to hear what people think. They might talk about new laws or rules. These meetings help leaders learn about things that matter to the community. Even though they have a special name, they do not always happen in a town hall building. People often meet in schools, libraries, or churches instead. These events are usually held in public places for free.

Most town halls follow a simple way of working. First, a leader might give a short speech. Sometimes other local leaders speak to the group too. The main part happens when the floor opens for the audience. People use this time to share their ideas or ask questions. They might talk to elected officials or people running for office. If a crowd is very large, people might split into smaller groups. Each small group picks one person to summarize what they discussed.

These meetings have a long history in many places. In the United States, they are linked to old meetings in New England. However, town halls are different because people do not vote there. In those old meetings, voters made legal decisions. In a town hall, people just voice their opinions. Australia has also held these meetings since the 1800s. In Canada, politicians have used them to discuss issues since the 1900s.

Technology has changed how these meetings look over time. In 1968, Richard Nixon held nine live TV sessions. These used a special format where a studio audience asked questions. This helped create the way many modern debates work today. In 1977, President Carter held a televised meeting in Massachusetts. Since the mid-2000s, many town halls have moved to the internet. In the years between 2015 and 2022, US Congress members held over 25,000 meetings.

Today, town halls can happen in many different ways. Some people use websites like Twitter or Reddit to talk to leaders. Others might join a group phone call to share their views. Sometimes, meetings can become very loud or intense during big debates. In 2009, many people gathered to argue about health care laws. Because of this, some leaders moved their talks to the phone or online. People even use songs or funny stickers to ask for meetings.
