These rivers provide fresh water and many natural resources to the area.

The climate in the city is tropical. This means it stays hot all year long. There are two main seasons to notice. The wet season lasts from May to November. During this time, winds bring moisture from the ocean. This makes the air feel very humid. The dry season lasts from December to April. At night, the temperature can drop to 22 °C. Because the city is a flood plain, the rivers sometimes overflow.

The city has a very long and changing history. It became the national capital in 1865. Before that, it was the capital at different times. In the 1960s and 1970s, many people moved there to escape war. Later, the Khmer Rouge forced everyone to leave the city in 1975. The city was mostly empty for a few years. People began to return after 1979. Since then, the city has been rebuilt with help from other countries.

Today, Phnom Penh is a very large and busy place. By 2019, more than 2 million people lived there.
