Rithy Panh is a famous filmmaker and writer from Cambodia.

He uses movies to tell important stories about his home country. His films often look at what happened after the Khmer Rouge rule. This was a very difficult time in Cambodian history. Panh's work is special because he lived through these events. He uses his art to help people remember the past. His movies help us understand how people survive hard times.

Making a documentary film is a careful way of working. Panh often uses a style called docudrama to tell stories. This means he mixes real facts with scenes that show how life felt. He might interview people who were there or show real places. For example, his film "S-21: The Khmer Rouge Killing Machine" brought former prisoners together. He even had them meet the people who once held them. This way, he shows the truth of what happened.

Panh's life began in the city of Phnom Penh. He was born there on April 18, 1964. His father was a teacher and worked for the Ministry of Education. In 1975, the Khmer Rouge forced his family to leave the city. His family suffered greatly in a rural labor camp. They died from hunger and working too hard. Panh escaped to a refugee camp in Thailand in 1979.

Panh later moved to Paris, France, to live and study. He was actually learning carpentry when he first found a video camera. This changed his life and led him to film school. He graduated from the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques. His movie "Rice People" was the first Cambodian film sent to the Oscars. Another film, "The Missing Picture," won a top prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

He also helped start the Bophana Center in Phnom Penh. This center saves old photos and sounds for the future.

Panh's work connects the past to the modern world. He shows how Cambodia changed as it grew. His film "The Land of the Wandering Souls" shows workers digging a trench for a cable. This cable helped bring new technology to the country. He also uses his voice to speak about world issues. In 2023, he signed a letter asking for peace in Gaza. Panh uses his fame to care about people everywhere.
