Trần Anh Hùng is a famous filmmaker from Vietnam. He was born in Da Nang on December 23, 1962. He moved to France when he was twelve years old.

His movies help people see the real beauty of his home country. He wants to show a different view of Vietnam. Many older films showed only poverty or hard times. Hung uses his camera to show tenderness and cruelty together. He wants his audience to feel the stories in their bodies. He says that art is the truth wearing a mask.

Making these films is a very special way of working. Hung does not always use a normal way of telling stories. He prefers a new language of film to touch people's feelings. He uses beautiful images to show how life works in Vietnam.

His stories come from his own knowledge of Vietnamese culture. For some movies, he used his first-hand experience from visiting the country. He was influenced by many great filmmakers from Europe and Japan. These masters helped him shape his unique style of art.

Hung's journey to making movies began with a lucky moment. He first studied philosophy at a university in France. Then, he saw a film called A Man Escaped by Robert Bresson. This movie made him want to study film instead.

He went to the National School Supérieure Louis-Lumière to study photography. While studying, he worked at the Musée d'Orsay bookshop to pay his way. In 1987, he made a short film based on a Vietnamese folk tale. This was his graduation project called La femme mariée de Nam Xuong.

He is well known for a special set of three films. This is called his "Vietnam trilogy." The first film was The Scent of Green Papaya in 1993. It was even nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film.

His second film was Cyclo, which came out in 1995. It was filmed in Ho Chi Minh City and won the Golden Lion. At age 33, Hung was one of the youngest people to win that prize. The third film in the set was The Vertical Ray of the Sun in 2000.

Hung has continued to make many different kinds of movies. He directed a film called I Come with the Rain in 2009. This was a psychological thriller with many famous actors. In 2010, he made Norwegian Wood based on a book by Haruki Murakami.

More recently, he made a film called The Taste of Things. This movie won the Palme d'Or prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023. His work continues to bring many awards to the world of cinema.
