Trần Anh Hùng is a celebrated Vietnamese-born French filmmaker. He was born in Da Nang, South Vietnam, on December 23, 1962. After the fall of Saigon in 1975, he immigrated to France at age 12. Hung is a key figure in overseas Vietnamese cinema. His work has gained immense international acclaim over the last two decades. He uses film to rebuild the image of the country he left behind. Through his lens, he offers a perspective that differs from previous cinema.

Hung’s approach to filmmaking is deeply personal and stylistic. He often rejects conventional storytelling methods in favor of a new cinematic language. He aims to challenge the feelings of his audience directly. He wants viewers to experience films through the "language of the body" rather than just critical reasoning. Hung famously stated that "art is the truth wearing a mask." His visual style seeks to show that tenderness and cruelty can coexist. This unique imagery helps shatter old stereotypes of poverty or backwardness.

His creative process is shaped by a blend of cultural knowledge and artistic influence. Many of his stories are rooted in his understanding of Vietnamese culture. For several films, he used first-hand experiences gained from traveling back to Vietnam. He is also heavily influenced by great European and Japanese filmmakers. These include directors like Robert Bresson, Ingmar Bergman, Akira Kurosawa, Andrei Tarkovsky, and Yasujirō Ozu. These influences help him craft his distinct visual and emotional narratives.

Hung’s journey into cinema began with a significant change in direction. He originally majored in philosophy at a university in France. However, seeing Robert Bresson's film *A Man Escaped* changed his path. He decided to study film and attended the National School Supérieure Louis-Lumière. There, he focused his studies on photography. To support himself during this time, he worked at the Musée d'Orsay bookshop. His first major project was a 1987 short film titled *La femme mariée de Nam Xuong*. This graduation project was inspired by an old Vietnamese folk tale.

One of his most significant achievements is his "Vietnam trilogy." This series consists of three distinct feature films. The first is *The Scent of Green Papaya*, released in 1993. It was acclaimed for its beautiful images and remains the only Vietnamese film nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The second film, *Cyclo*, was released in 1995. It tells stories of people living in Ho Chi Minh City and was filmed on location. The third film in the trilogy is *The Vertical Ray of the Sun*, released in 2000.

Throughout his career, Hung has reached many prestigious milestones. At age 33, he became one of the youngest filmmakers to win the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival for *Cyclo*. His films have won numerous high-level awards globally. *The Scent of Green Papaya* won two top prizes at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2023, his film *The Taste of Things* won the prestigious Palme d'Or at Cannes. He also received the Best Director award at the same festival for that film. His work continues to be recognized by organizations like the Academy Awards and the César Awards.

Beyond his famous trilogy, Hung has explored many different genres. In 2009, he directed the noir psychological thriller *I Come with the Rain*. This film featured an international cast, including Josh Hartnett and Elias Koteas. In 2010, he directed *Norwegian Wood*, which was an adaptation of a novel by Haruki Murakami. His filmography also includes the 2016 film *Eternity* and the 2023 film *The Taste of Things*. His ability to adapt different stories shows his versatility as a director. He remains a vital voice in contemporary world cinema.
