Lee's path to directing began with personal challenges in his youth. He was born on October 23, 1954, in Pingtung County, Taiwan. He grew up in a military dependents' village. His parents moved to Taiwan from De'an, Jiangxi, after the Chinese Civil War ended in 1949. His family placed a very heavy emphasis on formal education. Lee originally hoped to become a professor like his father. However, he failed the required university entrance examinations twice. This frustration led him to the National Arts School. There, he discovered a deep interest in drama and the arts.

After military service, Lee moved to the United States to study theater. He attended the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and graduated in 1980. He originally wanted to be an actor. However, he found that speaking English was a significant challenge. This difficulty caused him to pivot toward directing instead. He later enrolled at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. He earned a Master of Fine Arts in film production there. During this time, he was a classmate of filmmaker Spike Lee. His student work, such as the short film *Shades of the Lake*, won awards in Taiwan. His thesis film, *Fine Line*, won the Wasserman Award for Outstanding Direction.

Lee's professional breakthrough came through a series of successful films in the early 1990s. He is famous for his "Father Knows Best" trilogy. This trilogy includes *Pushing Hands* (1991), *The Wedding Banquet* (1993), and *Eat Drink Man Woman* (1994). These films explore the tension between tradition and modernity. They also look at the conflict between Eastern and Western values. *The Wedding Banquet* won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. It was also nominated for an Academy Award. *Eat Drink Man Woman* was a major box office hit in Taiwan. It earned Lee a Best Director award from the Independent Spirit awards.

In 1995, Lee transitioned into major Hollywood productions with *Sense and Sensibility*. This was his first film produced in the English language. He worked closely with screenwriter and actress Emma Thompson to adapt the Jane Austen novel. This project made him a second-time winner of the Golden Bear. He later directed the 1997 drama *The Ice Storm*, which competed at the Cannes Film Festival. While some films like *Ride with the Devil* (1999) were box office disappointments, Lee did not stop. His success returned with the 2000 film *Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon*. This movie focused on the *wuxia* genre, which features martial artists in ancient China. It became the highest-grossing foreign film in many countries, including the United States.

Lee has demonstrated incredible versatility by directing very different types of movies. In 2003, he directed the big-budget superhero film *Hulk*. This film grossed over $245 million at the box office. He then moved to a much smaller, independent project called *Brokeback Mountain* in 2005. This film explored the lives of two Wyoming sheepherders. It became a cultural phenomenon and won many Best Director awards. His filmography also includes *Life of Pi* (2012) and *Gemini Man* (2019). These varied projects show his ability to handle both massive spectacles and quiet, personal dramas.

Ultimately, Ang Lee's career connects different cultures and cinematic styles. He bridges the gap between Chinese traditions and Western filmmaking techniques. His ability to move between English-language and Chinese-language films is quite rare. He uses the medium of film to probe the depths of the human heart. Whether through martial arts action or family dinners, his work seeks to understand people. He remains one of the most significant directors in modern cinema history.
