He is a leader in the Taiwan New Wave cinema movement. This group of filmmakers changed how movies were made in his country. He works as a director, a writer, a producer, and sometimes an actor. His stories often look at how history changes people's lives. He focuses on how big events affect small groups or single people. This makes his films feel very personal and deep. Many people around the world study his work to learn about art.

His way of filming is very special and careful. He often uses extreme long takes, which means the camera stays still for a long time. Instead of moving the camera, he uses intricate choreography. This is a fancy way of saying the actors move in a planned way within the frame. He also uses improvisation to help find the best way to play a scene. This helps the acting feel natural and real. Sometimes his shots do not follow a simple order of time or cause. This style is called elliptical storytelling, and it makes the viewer think deeply.

Hou was born in 1947 in the Meixian District of Guangdong. His family was Hakka. Later that year, his father moved to Taichung City for work. His family joined him in Taiwan the very next year. Hou went to the National Taiwan Academy of the Arts to study. He started his career making romantic comedies like Cute Girl in 1980. These early films were different from his famous later works. They were made to help popular pop stars like Kenny Bee and Feng Fei-fei shine.

He has won many of the most important awards in film. In 1989, he won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for A City of Sadness. This was the first Taiwanese film to win that top prize. He also won the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015 for The Assassin. In the 1990s, critics voted him the "Director of the Decade." He has worked closely with writer Chu T’ien-wen for many years. He also worked with a camera expert named Mark Lee Ping-bing to create beautiful images.

His work connects to many different types of stories and cultures. He made a Japanese film called Café Lumière in 2003 to honor a director named Yasujirō Ozu. He also worked on a project in France called Flight of the Red Balloon. This film was about a French family seen through a Chinese student's eyes. Some of his movies, like The Puppetmaster, tell the life story of the puppeteer Li Tian-lu. His films help us understand how tradition and modern life meet. They show us how people hold onto their roots during big changes.
