He is known as a leader of the Japanese New Wave. This was a movement of bold and new filmmaking. He directed 23 feature films between 1959 and 1999. His work was often very provocative and daring. People still study his films today because they were so different. He wanted to show the real world in new ways.

Making his films was often a hard job. He used many different styles to tell his stories. Sometimes he used a style called farce to make fun of serious things. He also used special visual techniques to change how a story felt. In one film, he used a style to create distance between the viewer and the story. This helped people think more about the ideas on screen. He even had to send film to France to be processed. This was because he wanted to show scenes exactly as they happened.

Ōshima's life shaped the movies he made. He was born into a family with samurai roots. His father was a government official with a large library. His father died when Ōshima was only six years old. He wrote about this in an essay in 1992. He said this was the most important event of his childhood. After college, he joined the company Shochiku Ltd. in 1954. He made his first feature film in 1959.

Many of his films dealt with big, serious ideas. His film Cruel Story of Youth came out in 1960. It showed the lives of young people in a very honest way. In 1968, his film Death by Hanging gained fame at the Cannes Film Festival. It looked at how people were treated unfairly in Japan. Another famous film was Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence in 1983. This movie featured the musician Ryuichi Sakamoto and the star David Bowie. It was set in a Japanese prison camp during a war.

His movies often connected to the politics of the time. He was a left-wing activist who cared about social rules. He made films about class and racial discrimination. He also made a documentary called Diary of Yunbogi in 1965. This film was about street children living in Seoul, South Korea. Even when his work caused trouble, he kept making art. He served as president of the Directors Guild of Japan for many years. He passed away in 2013 at the age of 80.
