Ozu had a very specific way of making his movies. In 1928, he made a film called Body Beautiful. This was the first time he used a low camera position. This style became his famous trademark. He kept the camera low to the ground during scenes. This helped create a unique look for his stories. He also worked closely with a writer named Kogo Noda. The two men worked together for most of their careers. They even measured their progress by how much sake they drank while writing.

Ozu was born in the Fukagawa district of Tokyo. His father, Toranosuke Ozu, ran a family fertilizer business. As a young boy, Ozu lived in Matsusaka in Mie Prefecture. He went to Ujiyamada High School when he was twelve years old. While at school, he enjoyed watching movies like Quo Vadis. Seeing the film Civilization inspired him to become a director. He tried to go to university but did not pass the exams. Eventually, he began working at the Shochiku Film Company in 1923.

He was stationed in places like Nanjing and Hankou. In 1943, he was sent to Singapore to make a documentary. After the war ended, he returned to Japan in 1946. He wanted to be remembered for his art rather than his wartime work. He worked at the Ofuna studios to start his new chapter. He lived with his mother until she passed away in 1961.

Many people consider Ozu's films to be true masterpieces. His film Tokyo Story is one of his most famous works. In a 2012 poll, critics voted it the third-greatest film of all time. That same poll showed 358 directors voted it the greatest film ever. He also made a famous group of films called the Noriko trilogy. These included Late Spring, Early Summer, and Tokyo Story.
