It tells a touching story about an elderly couple, Shūkichi and Tomi Hirayama. They live in Onomichi, a town in western Japan. The couple travels to the big city of Tokyo to visit their grown children. However, their children are very busy with their own lives. Most of them do not have much time to spend with their parents. This film is a Shomin-geki, which means it shows the lives of ordinary people. It explores how families change and grow apart over time.

The movie follows the couple as they experience the busy life of the city. Their son Kōichi is a doctor, and their daughter Shige runs a hair salon. Because they are so busy, they cannot host their parents well. Only Noriko, the widowed daughter-in-law, makes time to show them around Tokyo. She takes them on a sightseeing tour despite her demanding office job. The story also shows the sadness of loss and the changing traditions in Japan. It highlights the gap between rural life and the modern, urban world.

Director Yasujirō Ozu created this film with a very specific style. He used a low camera position that stays almost still. This view is meant to feel like sitting on a tatami mat, a traditional Japanese floor mat. Ozu also used minimalism, which means he kept things very simple. He often showed scenes of landscapes or objects instead of people during transitions. Sometimes, important events happen off-camera, and we only hear about them through talk. This way of filmmaking makes the story feel quiet and thoughtful.

Ozu and his collaborator, Noda, worked on the script for 103 days. They wrote it while staying at a place called Chigasakikan in Kanagawa. The film was shot between July and October in 1953. It used locations like Tokyo, Onomichi, Atami, and Osaka. Many scenes were filmed at the Shochiku Ōfuna Studio in Kamakura. The movie was inspired by a 1937 American film called Make Way for Tomorrow. However, Ozu changed the setting to post-war Japan to show different cultural feelings.

Tokyo Story is now considered one of the greatest movies ever made. In 2012, a group of film directors voted it the best film of all time. It won the very first Sutherland Trophy in London in 1958. At first, some people thought it was "too Japanese" to sell in other countries. But later, critics in New York City gave it amazing reviews. Famous directors like Martin Scorsese have called it an essential film. It remains a beautiful way to understand human relationships and time.
