Many people call her one of the greatest actresses of all time. She was a symbol of the golden era of Japanese cinema. People in Japan even gave her a special nickname. They called her "the Eternal Virgin." This name helped show her importance to film history. She was a very skilled performer who could move audiences deeply.

Her journey into acting began through her own family. Her elder sister was married to a film director named Hisatora Kumagai. He encouraged her to leave school to work in movies. In 1935, she started working at Nikkatsu Studios near Tokyo. She was only 15 years old when she debuted.

After World War II, Hara's career changed in new ways. She starred in movies that showed a "new" Japanese woman. These characters looked forward to a bright and hopeful future.

In her later years, Hara chose to live a very quiet life. She moved to Kamakura and stayed away from the public eye. She did not want to be photographed or interviewed. She later said she acted mostly to support her family. She died of pneumonia in 2015 at the age of 95. Even though she left acting, her legacy lives on in film history.
