It was directed by Yasujirō Ozu and written by Ozu and Kogo Noda. The story is based on a short novel called *Father and Daughter* by Kazuo Hirotsu. This movie is very important because it is the first part of the "Noriko trilogy." In this group of films, the actress Setsuko Hara plays a woman named Noriko. The other two films in the trilogy are *Early Summer* and *Tokyo Story*.

People love this film because it shows the deep feelings of a family.

The movie belongs to a style called *shomin-geki*. This is a type of cinema that shows the daily lives of working and middle-class people.

The story follows a father named Shukichi Somiya and his daughter, Noriko. Shukichi is a widower, which means his wife has passed away. Noriko takes care of the home by cooking, cleaning, and mending clothes. A relative named Aunt Masa wants Noriko to get married. At first, Noriko does not want to marry because she does not want to leave her father alone. Eventually, she meets a man named Satake and agrees to an arranged marriage.

Making the film was a hard job because of censorship. During this time, the Allied Powers were occupying Japan. Censors had many rules about what could be shown on screen. For example, they did not like the custom of arranged meetings for marriage, known as *miai*. They thought these meetings made individual choices seem less important. The filmmakers even had to change parts of the script to follow these rules. They had to remove mentions of the ruins in Tokyo caused by bombings. They even changed a line about the Japanese Navy to avoid trouble.

Even with these rules, the director found clever ways to tell his story.

Some scholars believe Ozu used the film to show the beauty of Japanese tradition. The movie includes many traditional things, like a tea ceremony and a Noh performance.

A Noh performance is a traditional type of Japanese drama. While the film shows modern things like Coca-Cola signs, it also focuses on ancient landmarks and Zen gardens. Some people think Ozu wanted to show that Japanese traditions were very special. He used these symbols to create a strong sense of history and culture.

*Late Spring* has received many awards and high praise over the years. In 1950, it won the Kinema Junpo award for the best Japanese production of 1949. It was later released in the United States in 1972 and received positive reviews there too. In a 2012 poll by the British Film Institute, it was ranked as the 15th greatest film of all time. It is the second highest-ranking Japanese-language film on that list. Many experts call it a perfect study of how characters act. It remains a masterpiece of Japanese cinema today.
