Kinoshita worked his way up through the film industry. He started in 1933 as a film processor. This means he worked in a lab with film. Later, he became a camera assistant. He also worked as an assistant director. He learned a lot from his mentor, Yasujirō Shimazu. Kinoshita eventually became a director in 1943. His first film was called Port of Flowers. He even began writing scripts for his movies. This helped him tell his own unique stories.

Kinoshita was born Masakichi Kinoshita on December 5, 1912. He grew up in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture. His family owned a grocery store and made pickles. He loved movies when he was a young boy. His parents did not want him to make films. He even tried to run away to Kyoto once. An actor named Junosuke Bando helped him try. Later, his determination convinced his parents to support him. He worked hard to join the Shochiku studio.

Kinoshita made many different kinds of films. In 1951, he made Carmen Comes Home. This was Japan's first color feature film. He also made the famous film Twenty-Four Eyes in 1954. His life saw many changes and hard moments. During the war, he made films called propaganda. These films were meant to support the war effort. However, Kinoshita added comedy to show how people suffered. One film, Army, showed a mother grieving for her son. This caused him much criticism from leaders. After the war, he made movies about family life. He even traveled to France to meet René Clair. Kinoshita died on December 30, 1998, from a stroke.
