Mikio Naruse was a famous Japanese film director and writer. He made 89 films between 1930 and 1967. Most of his movies were shōshimin-eiga, or common people dramas. These stories often focused on women and their lives. His films showed the mix of old traditions and new ways in Japan. People often compare his work to the director Yasujirō Ozu. Naruse was a major figure during Japan's golden age of film.

Naruse's movies often had a very specific feeling. He used a concept called mono no aware. This means a gentle sadness about how things pass away. He believed the world could sometimes betray people. His characters often dealt with unhappy families or difficult marriages. Many of these stories were based on books by famous writers. He worked closely with the writer Fumiko Hayashi on six films. These included titles like Floating Clouds and Lightning.

Naruse started his career at the Shōchiku film studio. He began as a light crew assistant in the 1920s. He directed his first film in 1930. This short comedy was called Mr. and Mrs. Swordplay. He later moved to P.C.L. studios, which later became Toho. His film Wife! Be Like a Rose! was very important. It was the first Japanese film shown in the United States. This movie was named Best Movie of the Year by Kinema Junpo.

He worked with many talented actresses throughout his life. Hideko Takamine was one of his most important partners. She starred in about 20 of his films. He also worked with actresses Kinuyo Tanaka and Setsuko Hara. Naruse was known for being a very quiet director. He did not give much instruction to his actors. The famous director Akira Kurosawa called him a self-assured man. He liked to do almost everything himself on the set.

In his later years, Naruse made more dramatic movies. He made films like Sound of the Mountain and Flowing. These stories looked at how people handle money and change. His last film was called Scattered Clouds in 1967. Naruse died of colon cancer on July 2, 1969. He was 63 years old when he passed away. Even though he was less famous than Akira Kurosawa, he was a master. His smart way of telling stories still matters to film fans today.
