Eldar Ryazanov was a very famous filmmaker from the Soviet Union and Russia.

He was a director, a writer, and even a poet. Most people remember him for his funny movies called comedies. He often made a special kind of movie called a tragicomedy. This means the story has funny parts but also some sad parts. His movies showed what daily life was like for people. Many people in many different countries still love his work today.

Making these movies was a big job that required much skill. Ryazanov often acted in his own films as well. He might play a doctor, a passenger, or even a judge.

He worked on many different kinds of stories. Some were short documentaries about real things happening in the world. Others were long stories with many actors and beautiful sets. He used his talent to make people laugh and think at the same time.

Ryazanov was born in Samara on November 18, 1927.

His father, Aleksandr, was a diplomat who worked in Tehran. His mother was named Sofya. When he was young, his family moved to Moscow in 1930. Life was not always easy for his family during this time. In 1937, his father was arrested by the government. He spent 18 years in labor camps. Ryazanov grew up with his mother and her new husband, Lev.

In the early 1950s, Ryazanov began making films. At first, he only wanted to make serious movies. A man named Ivan Pyryev told him to try comedy instead. Pyryev said that anyone can make a melodrama, but few can make good comedy. Ryazanov made his first big hit, Carnival Night, in 1955.

He won many awards, like the USSR State Prize in 1977. He was also named a People's Artist of the USSR in 1984. He won a Nika Award for Best Director in 1991.

His movies are still a big part of culture today. For example, his film The Irony of Fate is shown every December 31. This is on New Year's Eve in many countries. People have even named a street in Moscow after him. In 2017, a museum opened at his childhood home in Samara. There is even an asteroid named 4258 Ryazanov to honor him. He passed away in November 2015 at the age of 88.
