He was known for making films that felt very special. Many people call his style "lyric comedies." This means his stories were often both funny and a little bit sad at the same time. People loved watching his movies because they felt real and full of feeling. He spent his life telling stories that stayed in people's hearts long after the lights came up in the theater.

His journey into movies took a few different steps. First, he studied to be an architect at the Moscow Architecture Institute. He worked as an architect for two years before changing his path. In 1956, a new film school called the Higher Director's Courses opened at Mosfilm. He studied there under Mikhail Kalatozov and graduated in 1959. After that, he joined the Mosfilm studio to start his career as a professional director.

Georgiy was born in Tbilisi to a Georgian family. His mother, Maria, worked as a film director and assistant at several studios. His aunt, Veriko Anjaparidze, was a famous actress on stage and in movies. His family moved to Moscow when he was very young. During the Great Patriotic War, Georgiy and his mother stayed in Tbilisi with relatives. His father worked as an engineer to build underground command centers and became a major general.

Georgiy made many movies that millions of people went to see. His film *Gentlemen of Fortune* was watched by 65 million people. Another movie, *Afonya*, was seen by 62.2 million people. He also made a famous science fiction movie called *Kin-dza-dza!* in 1986. He won many big awards for his hard work. In 1989, he was named a People's Artist of the USSR. In 1997, he received the State Prize of the Russian Federation.

He also had many fun traditions in his work. He worked with his close friend, the actor Yevgeny Leonov, for 30 years. He even put a funny name, R. Khobua, in the credits of almost all his movies. This was a joke about a Georgian builder he once met. His movies often linked to each other by using the same songs or characters. This made his films feel like they were all part of one big, wonderful world.
