Many people called him a magician or a master of cinematic worlds. His films were special because they were poetic and symbolic. They did not always tell stories in a straight line. Instead, they felt like beautiful, moving dreams. Filmmakers and historians think he was one of the greatest directors ever. He created art that felt very different from the usual style of his time.

Life was often difficult for Parajanov due to the Soviet government. The authorities banned many of his film projects between 1965 and 1973. They also accused him of being bisexual and having political views. In 1973, he was arrested and sent to a hard labour camp. He served four years of a five-year sentence. Many famous people from around the world helped him. Directors like Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola joined others to ask for his release. Famous writers like John Updike also helped. He was finally released in December 1977.

Even when he could not make films, Parajanov stayed creative. While in prison, he made about 800 drawings and many collages. He also made small, doll-like sculptures. After prison, he made intricate collages and even whimsical suits. He eventually returned to cinema in 1985 with The Legend of Suram Fortress. His last film, The Confession, was left unfinished when he died. He died of lung cancer in Yerevan on July 20, 1990. Today, his unique art still fascinates people all over the world.
