His movies are special because they explore deep ideas about the spirit and the mind. They often feel like beautiful, dreamlike visions. He used a style with very slow pacing and long takes. This means the camera stays still for a long time. He also loved to show nature and the way people remember the past. His art makes people stop and think about life.

Making these films required a lot of careful work. Tarkovsky studied film at a school called VGIK. He learned from a teacher and mentor named Mikhail Romm.

This experience in nature likely helped his later films. He eventually finished film school and made his first big movie. He used his skills to turn stories into moving pictures.

Sometimes, making art was a hard job for Tarkovsky. He had many creative fights with the leaders of his country. These leaders did not always like his films. For example, his film Mirror was given a limited release. It was only allowed to play in certain small theaters. Because of these troubles, he decided to leave his home in 1979. He moved abroad to make his final two films. These were called Nostalghia and The Sacrifice. He finished his last film in 1986.

Even though he is gone, people still celebrate his work. He won many awards, including a BAFTA for The Sacrifice. In 1990, he was given the Lenin Prize after he died.
