It was directed by Andrei Tarkovsky and co-written by Andrei Konchalovsky. The movie is loosely based on the life of Andrei Rublev. He was a real person who lived in 15th-century Russia. Rublev was a famous icon painter, which means he made religious paintings. Tarkovsky wanted to show Rublev as a world-historic figure. He also wanted to explore how faith and art work together. The film aims to show a realistic look at medieval Russia.

The story is told through eight different episodes. These episodes show different moments in the life of the painter. The film begins with a prologue about a man named Yefim. Yefim flies in a hot air balloon tied to a church spire.

Later, the film follows Rublev and other monks like Daniil and Kirill. They wander through the countryside looking for work. We see them meet other artists like Theophanes the Greek. The film also shows characters like a jester, or skomorokh. A jester is a person who uses jokes to mock leaders.

Making the film was a very hard job due to history. The movie was made in the Soviet Union during the Brezhnev era. At that time, the government followed a rule called state atheism. This meant they did not like movies about religion. Because of this, the film was censored for many years. It was only shown once in Moscow in 1966. A different version was shown at the 1969 Cannes Film Festival. That version won a prize called the FIPRESCI prize. Later, a censored version was finally released in the Soviet Union in 1971.

Many different versions of the film exist today. When it came to the United States in 1973, it was cut for commercial reasons.

This happened through Columbia Pictures. Because of the many cuts, the film was not always seen in its full way. However, many film critics and directors soon saw it as a highly original work. Even after being restored to its original version, it stayed famous. It is now considered one of the greatest films of all time. It often ranks very high in polls by critics and directors.

The film uses the life of an artist to talk about big ideas. Tarkovsky believed that art grows inside a person like fruit. He felt that an artist must have faith to make their work. The movie shows a very turbulent time in Russian history. There were fights between rival princes and raids by the Tatars. These events caused much trouble and sadness for the people. Even during these dark times, the film looks at the beauty of art. It shows how people try to create things in a difficult world.
