He created religious art called icons and large wall paintings called frescoes. His work is known for being very peaceful and calm. People see his art as a symbol of quiet joy and spiritual beauty. For many, his paintings represent the very best of Russian religious art. He is even considered a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. This means people hold his life and his skill in very high honor.

Rublev had a special way of making his art look balanced.

He combined two different styles into one beautiful look. One style was a very strict and simple way of painting. The other style was a more smooth and classic way called Byzantine mannerism. When he painted, he used color and shape to create a sense of harmony. His most famous icon is called The Trinity, made around the year 1410. He based this on an older painting called the Hospitality of Abraham. However, he changed it to focus only on the Mystery of the Trinity.

We do not know exactly where Rublev was born.

He probably lived at the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius near Moscow. He likely studied under a master painter named Theophanes the Greek. The first time we see Rublev's name is in the year 1405. He worked there on the Cathedral of the Annunciation in the Moscow Kremlin. At that time, he was the youngest master on the list. He worked alongside other important painters like Prokhor of Gorodets.

Rublev worked on many large and important buildings.

In 1408, he helped paint the Dormition Cathedral in Vladimir. He also painted the Trinity Cathedral between the years 1425 and 1427. Later, he moved to the Andronikov Monastery in Moscow. There, he painted the frescoes for the Saviour Cathedral. He may have also painted small, beautiful pictures in the Khitrovo Gospels. Rublev died sometime between the years 1427 and 1430 at the monastery.

In 1551, a meeting called the Stoglavi Sobor named his style as a model. This means other artists were told to paint like him. Many famous painters, such as Dionisy, studied his work. Today, you can see his art at the Andrei Rublev Museum in Moscow. The church celebrates his feast day on January 29. In 1966, a filmmaker named Andrei Tarkovsky even made a movie about his life.
