The oldest building is the Smolensky Cathedral. It has six pillars and five domes. Most of the other churches were built in the 1680s. They use a style called Muscovite Baroque. This style features bright, blood-red walls and decorative towers. One very famous building is the tall, slender belltower. It was built in six tiers. At one time, it was the tallest structure in 18th-century Moscow.

A leader named Grand Duke Vasily III founded the convent. He did this on May 13, 1524. He wanted to honor the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God. This was a way to say thank you for capturing Smolensk in 1514. The convent started as a fortress near the Moskva River. It helped protect the southern part of Moscow. Over time, the convent became very wealthy. It owned many villages and thousands of peasants. Even famous leaders like Ivan the Terrible gave land to the site.

Many important people lived within these walls throughout history. Some members of royal families lived here because they were forced to take religious vows. This included Sofia Alekseyevna, who was the half-sister of Peter the Great.

The convent also helped the community in other ways. It once held a military hospital for soldiers. It also had an orphanage for young girls. Even during hard times, like the era of Napoleon, the nuns worked to save the buildings. The site has changed many times from a monastery to a museum and back again.

The convent is also a place where many famous people rest.

There is a large cemetery both inside and outside the walls. Many notable Russians are buried here. This includes famous writers like Anton Chekhov and Nikolai Gogol. It also holds many important leaders from the Soviet era. The site connects the history of religion with the history of the city. Today, it remains a place where people visit to see beautiful art and learn about the past.
