It sits right in the historic center of Moscow. The word "kremlin" means a fortress inside a city. Many cities have their own Kremlin, but the one in Moscow is the most well known. Today, it is also used as a name for the Russian government.

The complex includes five palaces and four large cathedrals. It is surrounded by a high wall with many towers. This site overlooks the Moskva River and the famous Red Square.

Inside the walls, the buildings serve many different roles. The Grand Kremlin Palace was once a home for the Tsars. A Tsar was a ruler of Russia. Now, this palace is the home for the President of Russia.

The complex also holds many important museums. Visitors can take supervised tours to see these museums. The heart of the area is Cathedral Square. This square is surrounded by six important buildings. One of these is the Cathedral of the Dormition, which was finished in 1479. It was the main church where Tsars were crowned.

History shows that people have lived on this hill for a very long time. The Meryans lived there as early as the 2nd century BCE. Later, the Slavs occupied the area in the 11th century. In 1156, Prince Yuri Dolgorukiy made the site much larger. The Mongols destroyed the site in 1237. After that, Ivan I Kalita rebuilt it using oak wood in 1339. By 1366, Dmitri Donskoi began building a strong citadel out of white limestone.

This new wall was strong enough to survive a siege by Khan Tokhtamysh.

Many talented people helped shape the Kremlin we see today. Grand Prince Ivan III invited architects from Italy to help rebuild the site. These builders included Pietro Antonio Solari and Marco Ruffo. Solari designed the new Kremlin wall and its many towers. The current brick walls were built between 1485 and 1495.

The highest tower is the Troitskaya Tower, which reached its height in 1495. Most of the towers are square, but there are twenty towers in total. The walls are very thick and enclose a large area. Some towers even had wooden tents on top long ago.

There were many difficult times in the history of the Kremlin. In 1812, French forces occupied the fort during an invasion. When they left, they tried to blow up the Kremlin. This caused many explosions and damaged many churches. Later, during the Soviet period, many old buildings were destroyed. About 28 out of 54 historic buildings were lost during that time.

Some buildings, like the State Kremlin Palace, were built later to serve new needs. Today, the Kremlin remains a very important place for Russia.
