The history of the KGB began after changes in the Soviet government. It was formed in March 1954 under a leader named Ivan Serov. Before this, other agencies like the NKVD and OGPU did similar work. Leaders like Leonid Brezhnev later had a big impact on the group. Brezhnev took power in 1964. He was careful about how much power the spy chiefs had. KGB agents often tried to find secrets in other countries. In the United States, they looked for scientific and technical information. They wanted to learn about things like radar and jet engines. During the Second World War, they even tried to find atomic secrets. One famous case involved a young physicist named Theodore Hall. In 1967, a Navy officer named John Walker helped them too. He gave the KGB about one million US Navy messages over eighteen years.
