Vsevolod Pudovkin was a famous filmmaker from Russia. He was a director, an actor, and a writer.

Pudovkin was born in 1893 in Penza.

His father, Illarion, worked as a manager and a salesman. His mother, Yelizaveta, was a housewife. Pudovkin studied engineering at Moscow University. During World War I, he served in the military. He was captured by German forces during the war. While he was captured, he studied foreign languages. He also spent time making illustrations for books.

He made many important movies during his life.

His first big success was a silent film called Mother in 1926. He also made a trilogy of films about revolutionary policy. These included The End of St. Petersburg and Storm over Asia. In 1928, he signed the Manifest of Sound. This was a paper about how to use sound in movies. He later made historical epics like Suvorov in 1941. He won the Stalin Prize for these historical films.

Many people remember Pudovkin for his many awards.

He was named a People's Artist of the USSR in 1948. He received the Order of Lenin twice. He also won the Stalin Prize several times for his work. Pudovkin was also a teacher at the VGIK film school.
