Kieślowski began his career by making documentary films. These films recorded the real lives of city workers and soldiers. However, he faced a hard job called censorship. This meant the government changed his films or stopped them from being shown. He felt he could not tell the whole truth this way. Because of this, he switched to making fiction films. He believed stories allowed him more artistic freedom to show life.

He worked with a very special team for many years. He co-wrote stories with a lawyer named Krzysztof Piesiewicz. He also worked with a composer named Zbigniew Preisner. Preisner wrote the music for many of his most famous films. In his films, characters sometimes talk about a fictional composer named Van den Budenmayer. This musical connection helped create the mood of his stories. One of his most famous projects was Dekalog.

Kieślowski won many big prizes during his life. He won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1993. He also won a Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1994. In 1995, he received two Academy Award nominations. These were for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. His Three Colours trilogy is a very famous set of films. These three movies explore the colors of the French flag.

He married his wife, Maria, in 1967 while he was still in school. He passed away in 1996 during heart surgery at age 54. His grave in Warsaw has a special black marble sculpture. The sculpture shows two hands forming a space like a film camera. This is a beautiful way to remember his work.
