He is known for making films that look like beautiful, old paintings. His work is often inspired by the Renaissance and Baroque styles. These are famous ways of making art from long ago. He uses light and color to create very special scenes. His movies often show contrasts between different things. He might show nature next to big buildings or people next to furniture. Some of his famous films include The Draughtsman's Contract and The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover.

He is sometimes called a "philosopher of cinema" because of his deep ideas.

Greenaway's way of working involves many different tools. He does not just use a camera to make movies. He also makes multimedia art, which uses many types of media together. For example, he once used 100 videoprojectors to light up a palace. This project was called Peopling the Palaces at Venaria Reale. He also uses digital video to explore famous paintings from the past. In one show, he projected digital images onto a painting by Leonardo da Vinci. He even made a project about a painting by Paolo Veronese. This project used music and voices to bring the art to life for the audience.

Greenaway's journey began in Newport, Wales. He was born on April 5, 1942. His mother was a teacher and his father was a builder's merchant. His family moved to Wales to escape the Blitz during the war. Later, they moved to the London area and lived in Woodford. As a young boy, Greenaway wanted to be a painter. He studied art at Walthamstow College of Art starting in 1962. During this time, he trained as a muralist for three years. He also watched many European films to learn about storytelling.

His career has many important moments and dates. In 1965, he joined the Central Office of Information. He worked there for fifteen years as a director and an editor. In 1980, he made his first feature-length film called The Falls. This film was a huge and strange encyclopedia about flight. In the 1980s, he made many of his most famous movies. He often worked with a composer named Michael Nyman. In 2014, he received a special BAFTA award for his work in cinema. This award recognized his outstanding contribution to the world of film.

Today, Greenaway's work links art and technology in new ways. He lives in Amsterdam and teaches film studies in Switzerland. He uses special systems, like large plasma screens, to mix images live. This is sometimes called VJing, which is a way of performing with video. He also writes books and creates websites to tell his stories. His work can be seen in many places, like the Venice Biennial. Some people find his art very interesting, while others find it unusual. No matter what, he continues to use images to make people think.
