She was so talented that the leader, Norodom Sihanouk, gave her a royal title. He called her the "Queen with the Golden Voice." This title showed how much she meant to her country. She sang hundreds of songs during her short career. She also acted in several films during her time as a star.

Sothea sang many different kinds of music. At first, she sang traditional Cambodian ballads. These were slow and romantic songs. Later, she began to use a more modern style. She mixed Cambodian music with sounds from France and America. She used instruments like electric guitars, drums, and Farfisa organs. This created a sound often called psychedelic or garage rock. She even sang Khmer versions of famous Western songs. For example, she sang "Cry Loving Me," which was based on "Proud Mary."

Her journey started in a small place called Battambang province. She was born around 1948 to parents named Ros Bun and Nath Samien. Growing up on a farm, she was the second youngest of five children. She showed her talent as a very young child. In 1963, friends helped her enter a singing contest. She won that contest and became famous in her home area. In 1967, a singer named Im Song Seurm invited her to Phnom Penh. There, she became a star for the National Radio service.

Sothea's life had many different parts. She worked with the famous singer Sinn Sisamouth on many duets. She also worked with other singers like Pen Ran and Huoy Meas. During the Cambodian Civil War in the early 1970s, she even joined the military. She learned to be a paratrooper and jumped from planes.

This was a very brave thing to do. However, her personal life was often difficult and full of sadness. Some fans believe her hard times helped her write emotional songs. These songs had titles like "Brokenhearted Woman."

Later, a very dark time came to Cambodia. During the Khmer Rouge regime in the late 1970s, Sothea disappeared. No one knows exactly what happened to her. Many of her master recordings were lost or destroyed during this time.
