The city sits right on the Sangkae River. This river winds its way through the province. The river has always been very important for the people living there. It used to be the main way to travel to places like Phnom Penh. Today, you can even take a boat from Battambang to Siem Reap. This boat trip takes between six and seven hours.

The history of this city is very long and full of change. It started as a small fishing village in the 11th century. Later, the Khmer Empire founded it. For a time, the Siamese ruled the area as part of Inner Cambodia. In 1907, the land was given to France. This led to the building of a large French colonial town. You can still see many of these old buildings today.

Battambang is a place where many different styles meet. You can see Buddhist pagodas with Thai architecture. The oldest pagoda in the city is Wat Domrei Sar.

Food is a huge part of life in Battambang. The land around the city is very fertile. People often call this area the "rice bowl of Cambodia." This is because there are many rice mills here. The city is famous for its jasmine rice and street food.
