The city is situated along the Sangkae River. This river winds through the province and has historically provided a vital link for transportation. The city is a significant cultural and economic hub for the region. It is recognized globally for its food, art, and heritage.

The history of Battambang spans many centuries and political shifts. It began as a small fishing village in the 11th century. During this time, the Khmer Empire founded the settlement. In 1795, Siam annexed the area into the province of Inner Cambodia. The Siamese ruled through the Abhaiwongse family. By 1880, the city had grown into a trading center with 2,500 residents. The Sangkae River connected these traders to Phnom Penh and Saigon.

In 1907, the province was ceded to France. This made Battambang part of French Indochina. The French implemented a period of modernization and urban planning. They created a grid pattern of well-defined streets. They also built open canals and bridges in the Heritage Conservation Area. In 1917, two bridges linked both riverbanks. A second phase of development occurred in 1926. This phase focused on the west side of the city. It included a new railway connecting the city to Phnom Penh.

The 20th century brought both growth and extreme hardship. In 1953, Prince Norodom Sihanouk used the city as a center for independence. He led efforts to modernize the city into an industrial hub. Textile and garment factories were established by foreign investors. However, the Cambodian Civil War and the subsequent genocide caused great suffering. During the Democratic Kampuchea period, the city was forcibly evacuated. The population was moved into labor camps. The Battambang Provincial Museum was even used as a prison.

Following the fall of the Khmer Rouge, the city began to recover. In 1989, the reintroduction of private property rights helped the economy. Small businesses emerged around agricultural products. In 2009, the municipal government established a Heritage Protection Area. This protects approximately 800 historic buildings. The city also follows a "Master Development Plan 2030." This plan is unique because it is one of only two such plans in Cambodia.

Battambang is a center for diverse religious and architectural styles. Many Buddhist pagodas exist within the city. In 2022, 31 pagodas received heritage status. These buildings are at least 60 years old. Some show the Rattanakosin style from the Siamese era. Others feature a style unique to Battambang. The oldest pagoda is Wat Domrei Sar, built in the 19th century.

There is also a small Catholic community. South of the city, the nine-sided Bahá'í House of Worship stands with its central dome and spire.

The local economy relies heavily on the surrounding fertile land. This region is known as the "rice bowl of Cambodia." Many mills process jasmine rice for international markets. In 2018, over 71% of employed people worked in the service sector. This includes tourism, retail, and construction. In 2023, UNESCO added Battambang to the Creative Cities Network. It was named a City of Gastronomy.

Transportation in the city remains a key area for development. The city is linked to Bangkok and Phnom Penh via National Highway 5. A famous local attraction is the "norry," or bamboo train. This runs from Prasat Banan to Chhoeuteal commune. The city also has an airport. While it has been closed for some time, there are plans to upgrade it. This would help expand tourism and connect the city more effectively to the rest of the world.
