The Sangkae River winds through the city. This river helped people travel for a long time.

Many people call this area the "rice bowl of Cambodia." This is because the land is very good for farming. The city has many rice mills to process the grain. It is also famous for jasmine rice and tasty street food. In 2023, UNESCO named it a City of Gastronomy.

Battambang has a very long history. It began as a small fishing village in the 11th century. Later, the city saw many changes. It was once ruled by the Siamese. Then, it became part of French Indochina. You can still see old French buildings there today.
