The peregrine falcon is one of the most successful birds of prey on Earth.

It is famous for being incredibly fast. These birds can live almost anywhere on the planet. They live from the cold Arctic tundra to the warm tropics. They stay away from very high mountains and thick rainforests. They are also missing from New Zealand. This makes them the most widespread raptor in the world.

Many birds live in cities, but peregrines are very good at living there too. They use tall buildings as places to nest.

These falcons have a very specific way of hunting and living.

They mostly eat medium-sized birds like ducks or pigeons. In cities, they find plenty of food by eating feral pigeons. The female is much larger than the male. This difference in size is called sexual dimorphism. A female can be up to 30% larger than a male. The males often weigh around 500 to 750 grams. Females are heavier and can weigh more than 1,000 grams. They also have a special notch in their beak. This helps them kill prey by hitting the neck area.

Humans have studied these birds for a very long time.

The English scientist Marmaduke Tunstall first gave them their current name in 1771. The scientific name, *Falco peregrinus*, comes from Medieval Latin. It means "wandering falcon." This name describes how many of these birds migrate long distances. People have also used them for falconry for many eras. They have even been used as symbols for kings and nations. Some people even call them the "duck hawk" in North America.

There are many different types of peregrines called subspecies.

Scientists accept about 18 or 19 different subspecies around the world. Some live in the Rocky Mountains and are called American peregrines. Others live in the Mediterranean and are called Maltese falcons. There is also a subspecies in the Sunda Islands called *ernesti*. These birds can look slightly different depending on where they live. For example, some have darker feathers or different patterns on their bellies. They are all part of the same large family.

It is helpful to think of the peregrine as a master of its environment.

They can adapt to wild cliffs or even human skyscrapers. They once faced a big problem with a chemical called DDT. This chemical made it hard for them to survive. Because people stopped using DDT in the 1970s, the birds have recovered. Now, people protect their nests and release birds into the wild. They even have a black patch under their eyes called a malar stripe. This stripe works like sunglasses to reduce glare from the sun.
