The Egyptian vulture is a small and clever bird of prey.

Some people call it the white scavenger vulture. Others call it the pharaoh's chicken. These birds live in many places across the Old World. You can find them in North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula. They also live in West Asia and India. They like to stay in dry plains and lower hills.

These birds are very important for their environment. They help clean up the land by eating dead animals.

These vultures have a very interesting way of finding food. They mostly eat carrion, which is the meat of dead animals. However, they are opportunistic and will eat other things too. They eat small mammals, birds, and reptiles. They even eat insects found in dung. One amazing thing is how they eat bird eggs. They pick up a large pebble and toss it onto the egg. The pebble acts like a hammer to break the shell.

They also use twigs to roll up wool for their nests.

Scientists have studied these birds for a long time. Carl Linnaeus first described the species in 1758. He named it Vultur percnopterus in his book, Systema Naturae. Later, in 1809, Jules-César Savigny proposed the genus name Neophron. This genus only has one living species today. We also know about very old fossils of these birds. Some fossils were found in the Nefud Desert of Saudi Arabia. These fossils are estimated to be about 500,000 years old.

There are three main types of this vulture. The largest group is the nominate subspecies, N. p. percnopterus. These birds have dark grey bills and live in Europe and Africa. The smallest type is N. p. ginginianus from the Indian subcontinent. These birds have pale yellow bills. There is also a special group in the Canary Islands called N. p. majorensis. These island birds are larger than the others.

They do not migrate like the other birds.

Egyptian vultures are easy to spot when they fly. They have white feathers and a wedge-shaped tail. Their wings have black feathers that look very bright. In the wild, their feathers often look rusty or brown. This color comes from mud or soil they rub on themselves. They also have bright yellow skin on their faces. This color comes from eating certain plants and waste.
