It lives in the Andes mountains and near the Pacific coast. This bird is one of the largest flying birds in the world. It is also considered the largest bird of prey on Earth. The condor has a huge wingspan that can reach 10.5 feet.

It is a very heavy bird too. The average weight is about 26 pounds. This makes it heavier than most other flying birds.

These birds have a very interesting way of moving through the sky. Most birds flap their wings to stay up. The Andean condor is a soarer. It uses thermals, which are rising columns of warm air, to stay aloft. A flight recorder showed that these birds only flap their wings about 1% of the time during flight.

They flap most of the time only when they are taking off. After they reach a certain height, they just glide. They like to roost on high places to make launching easier. This helps them save energy while they hunt for food.

Finding out about these birds has a long history. A Swedish scientist named Carl Linnaeus described the Andean condor in 1758. He named it *Vultur gryphus* in his book called *Systema Naturae*. The name *Vultur* comes from the Latin word for vulture. The second part of the name comes from a Greek word meaning "hook-nosed."

The word "condor" itself comes from the Quechua word *kuntur*. Even though we have known about them for a long time, scientists are still studying how they are related to other birds.

Condors have very specific bodies that help them live in the mountains.

Their feathers are mostly black with white ruffs around their necks. Males have large white patches on their wings and a red comb on their heads. This comb is called a caruncle. The head and neck have very few feathers. This helps keep them clean while they eat. They are scavengers that eat carrion, which is meat from animals that are already dead. They often look for large animals like deer or cattle.

These birds are very important to the people living in South America. They are a national symbol for Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. They also appear in many local stories and myths.

However, the Andean condor faces some hard jobs today. They are considered vulnerable by the IUCN. This means they are at risk of disappearing. They face habitat loss and can be poisoned by lead in carcasses. To help them, several countries have started captive breeding programs to grow their numbers.
