Vulture

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Vultures are amazing birds of prey that act as nature's cleaners. They are scavengers, which means they eat carrion, or dead animals. There are 23 different species of vultures living today. Some live in Africa, Asia, and Europe, and these are called Old World vultures. Others live in North and South America, and these are called New World vultures.

A group of vultures flying together is called a kettle. When they are resting on the ground, they are called a committee. If they are eating together, they are called a wake.

Many vultures have bare heads without any feathers. This helps keep them clean while they are feeding on carcasses. This skin also helps them manage their body heat. In the heat, they might stretch their necks or open their wings. In the cold, they hunch their bodies and tuck in their heads. Some New World vultures even urinate on their own legs. This helps them cool down through evaporation and kills bacteria from the carcasses they walk on.

Scientists have studied how these birds are related for a long time. Early naturalists like Carl Linnaeus put all vultures in one group. Later, experts split them into Old World and New World groups. Some researchers even thought New World vultures were related to storks. However, DNA studies showed they are actually different. New World vultures and Old World vultures look similar because of convergent evolution. This is when different animals develop similar traits because they live in similar ways.

Old World vultures belong to the family Accipitridae, which includes eagles and hawks. They mostly find food by using their eyesight. New World vultures belong to the family Cathartidae. Some of these birds have a very strong sense of smell. They can smell dead animals from a mile away! One special bird, the bearded vulture, even specializes in eating bones. Vultures have very strong stomach acid with a pH of 1.0. This acid is so powerful it can digest germs like anthrax that would kill other animals.

Unfortunately, many vulture populations are in danger. In India and Nepal, many vultures died because of a drug called diclofenac used on livestock. In Africa, vultures face threats from the meat trade and poisoning. A study in 2016 found that nine of the 22 species are critically endangered. Losing vultures can be bad for humans too. Without them, other animals like feral dogs might increase, which can spread more disease. Protecting these birds helps keep our environment healthy and clean.
