They like areas with rocky spots and native woodlots like Eucalyptus stands. These eagles are very strong predators. They are known as generalists because they hunt many different things. This means they eat birds, reptiles, and many mammals.

These eagles have a very special way of working. They have long, broad wings and powerful feet.

Their most famous feature is a long, wedge-shaped tail. They also have feathers that cover their legs like baggy trousers. When they fly, they use deep and powerful wing beats. They can also glide and soar on wind currents. This helps them stay stable even in strong winds. They sometimes spread their wing edges to reduce drag. This helps them move through the air more easily.

Humans first described this bird in 1801.

An English scientist named John Latham gave it its first name. At one time, scientists put it in its own special group. Today, it belongs to the genus Aquila. This group is known as the booted eagles. These eagles are found on almost every continent. Genetic research shows they are close relatives of other large eagles. For example, they are very similar to the Verreaux's eagle in Africa.

There are some interesting facts about how they grow. Adults can have a huge wingspan.

They often stay with one partner for many years. They build large stick nests in the biggest trees. Most nests have only two eggs, but they can lay up to four. Young eagles might eat carrion, which is meat from dead animals. They also hunt invasive species like the European rabbit. This has helped their numbers grow back after humans once hunted them.

It is called the A. a. fleayi subspecies. This bird is larger than the eagles on the mainland. It also has a deep chocolate brown color. The Tasmanian eagle has very large talons too. These birds are very wary and timid around people. Even though they are bold hunters, they stay away from humans.
